Raven's matrices are abstract thinking tasks where you need to find the missing part of a visual pattern. A table with geometric shapes, symbols, or patterns appears before the player. One cell remains empty, and among the proposed options, you must choose the one that correctly continues the rule.
At first glance, such a task might seem like a regular mindfulness puzzle. In reality, it requires sequentially comparing elements, separating important features from random details, and forming a hypothesis about the hidden rule. In different matrices, the shape, quantity, position, direction, color, or method of combining elements can change. Sometimes a figure rotates by a certain angle, sometimes a new part is added to it, and sometimes the third cell is formed as a result of overlapping or subtracting the first two.
The name of this format comes from the British psychologist John Carlyle Raven, who developed progressive matrices in the 1930s. The tasks were created as a non-verbal way to study a person's ability to notice connections and draw conclusions. The word "progressive" means that in classical sets, the tasks gradually become more complex: from a simple continuation of a pattern to rules in which several characteristics change simultaneously.
What tasks with matrices develop
The main load in such puzzles falls on abstract and logical thinking. The player sees not a ready-made explanation, but only a set of visual examples. The rule must be independently derived from the matrix structure. This resembles the work of a researcher: first notice repeating changes, then propose an explanation, and finally test it on all rows or columns.
Matrices also train the ability to work with multiple features simultaneously. For example, a figure can move clockwise, change color every other cell, and gradually acquire an additional element. If you focus on only one characteristic, it is easy to choose an option that seems correct but violates another part of the pattern.
Working memory plays an important role. During the solution, you need to keep a possible rule in your head, compare it with different parts of the matrix, and abandon the hypothesis if it does not explain all elements. Such switching between options is also associated with cognitive flexibility: sometimes the first obvious idea turns out to be wrong, so you have to look at the image from another angle.
In psychological research, progressive matrices are often used as a non-verbal assessment of so-called fluid intelligence — the ability to reason and solve new problems without direct reliance on previously learned facts. However, a separate online simulator should not be taken as medical diagnostics, official IQ measurement, or a final assessment of intelligence. The result is influenced by experience in solving such tasks, concentration, fatigue, haste, and even how well a person understood the principle of a particular task.
How to solve Raven's matrices
The most reliable strategy is not to try to guess the correct answer immediately, but to break down the task into separate features. First, look at what changes from left to right. Then separately check what happens from top to bottom. The correct rule should usually align not with a single pair of cells, but with the entire matrix structure.
Start with the most noticeable characteristics: the number of objects, their shape, position, and direction. Count the elements in each cell. Check if they are added, disappear, or move from one position to another. If arrows, lines, or asymmetric figures are present, pay attention to rotations and mirror reflections.
It is useful to try to formulate the pattern in words. For example: "In each subsequent cell, the figure rotates by 90 degrees," "the third image contains elements of the previous two," or "the number of dots increases by one." A verbal rule is easier to check than a vague feeling that one of the options is simply "similar."
Do not rush to choose the first answer that fits one feature. In more complex matrices, incorrect options often specially match part of the rule. One may have the correct shape but the wrong number of elements. Another — the correct rotation, but the wrong arrangement of symbols. Therefore, after choosing, check the answer again against all found characteristics.
If the rule is not found, temporarily ignore small details and look at the general structure. Perhaps the elements alternate, move in a circle, form symmetry, or repeat every other cell. Then return to the details and check if they confirm this hypothesis.
Who and when this simulator is useful
Matrices will suit people who like logic puzzles, geometric patterns, and puzzles without complex calculations. To solve them, you do not need to memorize formulas or possess special knowledge: the main thing is to observe carefully, compare, and check your own assumptions.
The simulator can be used for a short mental warm-up before studying or work, as well as a separate exercise for concentration and abstract thinking. Regular practice helps to better recognize typical visual transformations and develop a systematic approach to similar tasks. At the same time, an increase in results does not necessarily mean a general increase in intelligence: partly a person simply gets acquainted with the format and faster recognizes already known principles.
To keep training useful, it is important not only to find the correct answer, but also to understand why it is correct. Try to briefly explain the pattern to yourself after each task. It is this transition from an intuitive guess to a conscious rule that turns a matrix from a random riddle into a full-fledged exercise in logical thinking.
