NAONAO is an abstract strategy game for two players on a 9×9 board. Players place tiles matching their edges, stack over already placed elements according to seniority rules, and aim to be the first to complete a figure of three matching symbols of their color. You can play against the computer or with another player.

Unlike games where it is enough to simply occupy three spaces in a row, NAONAO considers several tile properties at once: its position, edge symbols, color, matching capabilities, and rank in the seniority system. Because of this, every move changes not just one space, but the set of available continuations around it.

How Tile Matching Works

Tiles cannot be treated as independent elements. When placing them, you must consider their edges and how they connect with adjacent tiles. A successful match can simultaneously extend your own combination, restrict the opponent's moves, and prepare space for the next element.

At first, players often look for a tile that simply fits the current position. With experience, focus shifts to another question: what becomes possible after placing it? One option might leave only a single continuation, while another opens up several directions for development.

Positions that can form more than one potential figure are especially valuable. If the opponent is forced to block one plan, another may remain available. Therefore, the best moves do not always immediately bring victory—sometimes they merely create a flexible foundation for a future combination.

Stacking and Seniority

In NAONAO, an occupied space does not necessarily remain unchanged until the end of the game. Tiles can be stacked over according to an established seniority system. This allows players to seize important positions, destroy enemy setups, and reshape the board structure.

However, stacking carries risk. The top tile itself may prove vulnerable, while the previous element remains underneath it. Thus, controlling a space can be temporary.

Before stacking over a tile, consider:

whether this space is truly essential for the opponent's combination;

whether the opponent can stack over your tile in response;

which element will remain underneath;

whether you are wasting a strong tile on a secondary position.

Stacking is most useful when it serves multiple purposes: stopping a threat, reinforcing your position, or unlocking a new match. If a move only temporarily covers a single space, the opponent can quickly regain the initiative.

Memory of Hidden Tiles

After stacking, part of the information disappears from sight, but it does not stop influencing the game. It is crucial to remember which tile lies below, who owns it, and which combination it could restore if the top element is replaced.

This exact feature sets NAONAO apart from many traditional alignment games. The board has not only a visible state but also a hidden layer. Two visually similar positions may require completely different decisions depending on what lies beneath the stacked tiles.

After each move, quickly scan the entire board:

where two identical symbols already exist;

which spaces could complete a three-symbol figure;

which positions can be stacked over;

whether the opponent has created a double threat;

which of your tiles remain available for upcoming moves.

The most dangerous situation occurs when a single opponent move can complete one of several combinations. Therefore, you must block not only complete setups but also key intersection points connecting multiple possible plans.

Practical Strategies

Do not rush to create an obvious pair of identical symbols if it offers only one continuation. Such a plan is easy to read and block.

Look for tiles that match multiple adjacent elements. They offer more options and reveal less of your true intention.

Before stacking over, evaluate not only the immediate benefit but also the potential response. If the opponent can immediately cover your tile with a stronger element, the trade may be unfavorable.

Do not waste valuable stacking opportunities on spaces that do not affect future combinations. The ability to seize a key position may be needed later.

Create multiple attack vectors. A plan relying on a single space is easily dismantled. Two interconnected threats force the opponent to choose which one to stop.

Monitor your opponent's supply and options. A threat may look dangerous but lack continuation due to the absence of the required tile.
